Medical Peace Work Case: Ebola in Sierra Leone

2015

This is part of a case series aiming at framing important topics in Global Health and Medical Peace Work in the context of the 2014-15 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The scene is set in a small rural hospital in Sierra Leone. The main protagonists are Hanna Schneider, a German obstetrician-gynaecologist and Charles Koroma, a medical officer from Sierra Leone. Together they are trying to keep the hospital services running during the outbreak. Hanna and Charles have to deal with a possible case of Ebola in the hospital. During regular conversations with Charles about the underlying causes of the problems they face in acting as health professionals, Hanna learns more about the many shortcomings of the country's health system and underlying reasons for the high rates of maternal and child mortality. In their conversations, they also touch issues of global health governance and development aid.

Medical Peace Work (MPW) cases are developed by a transnational cooperation between medical organizations, teaching institutions, and related partners with expertise in health work, violence prevention, and peace building. MPW also offers a number of online courses and a collection of teaching resources for medical peace education.
