Medical Peace Work Case: Refugee Victims of Torture

2015

This case follows a physician as he treats a possible illegal immigrant and victim of systemic rape and torture. Medical Peace Work Case Study (10): Encountering Refugee Victims of Torture tells the story of how this general practitioner in the United Kingdom at first fails to recognize that his patient may have been tortured, but later becomes involved in her battle for asylum. In the course, students learn about the role health professionals can play in supporting victims of torture. While the case context is specific to the UK, the issues it raises make it suitable for teaching about refugee, migration, and asylum issues across borders of any country. A teaching note is available to registered educators and PhD students through the Case Centre.

Medical Peace Work (MPW) cases are developed by a transnational cooperation between medical organizations, teaching institutions, and related partners with expertise in health work, violence prevention, and peace building. MPW also offers a number of online courses and a collection of teaching resources for medical peace education.
