Can Global Sanitation 2020 Contribute to China's Prosperity?
2013
This fictional case imagines China’s Five Year Plan proposal aligning sanitation, its top global health priority, with foreign investment. The year is 2018 and China is the world’s new economic superpower surpassing even the United States. The time has come for China to create its next Five Year Plan, an economic blueprint that outlines the country’s priorities. Eager to retain its top economic status, China views overseas investment and their returns to be of great importance. How can China’s global sanitation investments simultaneously offer both direct economic and indirect (soft power) returns? Soft power returns could take the form of natural resource access, easier access to new markets, stronger trading relationships or even improved international relations.
This case was used for the 2013 International Global Health Case Competition at Emory University. Student teams made up of multi-disciplinary members presented solutions to complex scenarios. In these situations, as is often true in real life, there is no one perfect solution but rather one that involves compromising and prioritizing. Cases from past competitions are available through the Emory Global Health Institute.
