Hospitals Don't Burn: Caribbean Island Regional Hospital

This case study explores the fire evacuation procedures at the Caribbean Island Regional Hospital in Barbados as well as the recommendations by the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) to improve the hospital’s disaster management plan. The case describes PAHO’s Safe Hospitals Initiative, developed to help health care centers in Latin America and the Eastern Caribbean function effectively during emergencies, and in particular discusses the importance of comprehensive disaster response plans.

This case includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. This case is part of a 13-case collection written by students in the inaugural MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be copied and used free of charge without permission for any educational uses by an accredited educational institution.
