A Successful Model for Laparoscopic Training in Mongolia

2015

This case study describes how laparoscopic surgery in Mongolia was successfully introduced and expanded via educational methods and social engagement. An educational messaging campaign emphasized how surgery is an essential form of public health and articulated how the social context of surgery impacts both outcomes and the social acceptance of surgical innovations. Regionally specific and culturally appropriate deployment of these educational messages was also important to building acceptance of advanced surgical care in low-resource areas.

This case, developed by Babson University, is part of The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery Teaching Cases, Volume One. The Commission created these materials for mutual learning about the challenges and best practices for developing surgical systems, especially in resource poor settings. The cases can be read individually or used in the classroom.
