Transformation in Somaliland: Edna Adan Maternity Hospital

2015

This case study describes the challenges faced by the founder of the Edna Adan Maternity Hospital in Somaliland. Edna Adan Ismail encountered issues such as securing buy-in and permissions from the government, struggling to keep acquired land, designing and constructing a new building, educating a health care workforce, attracting physicians, and attending to the health care needs of a poor population. The case explores how she handled these and other complex struggles while working to expand and improve hospital operations, educate the local population of health care providers and patients, and meet the objectives and standards of international actors.

This case, developed by the Darden Business School at University of Virginia, is part of The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery Teaching Cases, Volume One. The Commission created these materials for mutual learning about the challenges and best practices for developing surgical systems, especially in resource poor settings. The cases can be read individually or used in the classroom.
