Weighing the Evidence: One University Takes a Hard Look at Disordered Eating Among Athletes

2015

This case describes eating disorders among college athletes, and explores the influence of coaches, the media, administrators, and other risk factors. It articulates how individual and family concerns are shaped by the larger environment, and how athletic programs might consider the ways in which diverse aspects of student life intersect and affect athletic pressure for performance. Through discussing the case, students learn how to use the social-ecological model to identify factors at multiple levels that influence risk of eating disorders. This case is accompanied by two downloadable lesson plans, one “Intermediate” and one “Advanced,” each of which includes a homework assignment and in-class assignment instructions.

The case is one in a series of teaching cases developed by the Strategic Training Initiative for the Prevention of Eating Disorders (STRIPED), a graduate-level training initiative based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Boston Children’s Hospital, to engage students in real-world dilemmas, problem solving, and teamwork to tackle current, high-impact issues in eating disorders prevention.
