Millions Saved: Preventing Diarrheal Deaths in Egypt
2007
This case describes the National Control of Diarrheal Disease Project of Egypt efforts to promote the use of locally manufactured oral rehydration salts. Taking these salts stops the deadly dehydration process that can occur from diarrheal disease if not treated properly. The program worked through public and private channels to distribute the salts and information. Target audiences included mothers all levels of health workers including doctors and nurses about optimal treatment of diarrhea.
This case study is part of Millions Saved, a collection of case studies produced by the Center for Global Development that describes successful examples of large-scale efforts to improve health in low- and middle-income countries, as well as promising interventions that fell short of their health targets when scaled-up in real world conditions.
