Millions Saved: Improving the Health of the Poor in Mexico

2007

This case describes Mexico’s Oportunidades program (formerly called Progresa) that provides a range of interventions in education, health and nutrition to rural poor families via a conditional cash grants program. Lowered rates of illness and malnutrition and increased enrollment have been attributed to this program.

This case study is part of Millions Saved, a collection of case studies produced by the Center for Global Development that describes successful examples of large-scale efforts to improve health in low- and middle-income countries, as well as promising interventions that fell short of their health targets when scaled-up in real world conditions.
