Millions Saved: Reducing Fertility in Bangladesh

2007

This case describes Bangladesh’s family planning program which through continued strong leadership, has sustained a successful outreach strategy and access to services. Over two decades contraceptive prevalence has gone from 3 to 54 percent while fertility has declined from 7 to 3.4 children per woman. This outcome is a surprising outcome if predictions had been made based on economic and social conditions alone.

This case study is part of Millions Saved, a collection of case studies produced by the Center for Global Development that describes successful examples of large-scale efforts to improve health in low- and middle-income countries, as well as promising interventions that fell short of their health targets when scaled-up in real world conditions.
