Lancet Commission 2016: Defeating Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias
2016
This Lancet Commission report identifies key steps that need to be taken to improve patient care and support the necessary research for developing safe and effective treatment and prevention strategies for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other age-related dementias. The prevalence of AD is increasing dramatically with aging populations worldwide. No treatment is yet available to halt or reverse the underlying pathology of established AD—the most common cause of dementia—and the economic and societal burdens of dementia threaten to become overwhelming as more people live into old age. Policy makers and governments therefore have a powerful incentive to provide the resources necessary to develop AD therapeutics. Europe is well placed to take a world lead, in partnership with international organizations, to develop new approaches to prevent or cure AD and other dementias and to provide models of compassionate care for patients.
