Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors for Adolescents
2016
This article summarizes the past, present, and anticipated global burden of disease (GBD) in young people aged 10–24 years using data on mortality, disability, injuries, and health risk factors from 1990-2013. Changing patterns of young people's health have the potential to undermine future population health as well as global economic development unless timely and effective strategies are put into place. Moreover, because of the large variations between countries in risks and burden, a global approach to improve youth health will fail unless the particularities of each country are taken into account. The authors also call for a strategy to overcome the financial and technical barriers to adequately capture young people's health risk factors and their determinants in health information systems.
The article accompanies the Lancet publication, Our Future: A Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing, which presents both the current dangers and opportunities both for the health and well-being of young people themselves and also for the future of society and future generations.
