Human Development Data (1990-2021)

2022

This data portal from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) shares global, regional, and country-level human development data from 1990 to 2021 across multiple dimensions, including health, education, gender, and environmental sustainability. Users can explore the data by country or dimension and narrow it down by specific indicators. All of the data is available for download.

Users can explore data for selected indices that the UNDP Human Development Office releases annually, including the Human Development Index—which assesses three key dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, access to knowledge, and a decent standard of living, providing a score and ranking for each country. Other human development indices include the Multidimensional Poverty Index, Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index, Gender Inequality Index, Gender Development Index, Planetary Pressures-Adjusted HDI, and the Gender Social Norms Index.

Educators can create exercises and activities in which students can examine different countries and compare them in terms of their HDI or other indices. Educators can use these comparisons to stimulate debate and dialogue about government policy priorities. Technical notes and statistical references are available to help navigate the data.
