MacArthur Foundation

The MacArthur Foundation is a private foundation that supports non-profit organizations through impactful investments in over fifty countries around the world. The MacArthur Foundation focuses on committing to a selection of “big bets”—areas of concern with opportunities for transformative change—field support, and enduring commitments to long-term engagement projects. The Foundation awards grants and fellowships to non-profit organizations, creative individuals, and other institutions. 

The MacArthur Foundation has five primary areas of work: global Climate SolutionsCriminal Justice in the United States, Local News, Nuclear Challenges and reducing nuclear threats, and On Nigeria, which focuses on reducing corruption and supporting Nigerian efforts to increase accountability and transparency. The Foundation has longer-term initiatives committed to Chicago, where it aims to make the city equitable, just, and effective in improving the quality of life, and to strengthen journalism and media in the United States by investing in independent journalism and focusing on democracy. The Foundation focuses on these issues through field support, both by philanthropic efforts and impactful investments to organizations, projects, and fellowships with individuals.
