Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023

2023

This report, published annually by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), provides a global overview of the progress toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, prepared in collaboration with over 50 international agencies and data from more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The report monitors the global and regional progress toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and analyzes selected indicators for each Goal. According to the report, the impacts of multiple crises spurred by climate change, the war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and a weakened global economy have resulted in devastating consequences for progress toward the 2030 Agenda. These crises have spurred widespread impacts on health, education, food and nutrition, the environment, and peace and security, leaving the world off track to meet the SDGs by 2030.

This year’s report highlights how the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in the number of people living in extreme poverty for the first time in a generation. Progress in areas such as income inequality and childhood vaccination has reversed for the first time in 30 years, and the climate crisis is worsening - with heat waves, droughts, and flooding increasing in frequency. The report highlights that without urgent action, 575 million people will be in extreme poverty by 2030, with those living in developing countries being affected the most. This special edition report outlines key areas that need urgent action to ensure a sustainable future for people and the planet by 2030, along with transformed global systems that guarantee human rights for all.

The report is accompanied by a summary of key messages from the report. The latest global, regional, and country data and metadata for the SDG indicators are available in the report’s statistical annex
