Ciguatera Fish Poison

This case considers the toxic illness of ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP), in the context of environmental change, health care, and tourism in the Bahamas. It describes how CFP is contracted and where it is most common, as well as prevention and diagnosis methods. It also discusses the health care infrastructure, population health, government systems, and employment industries of the Bahamas, using CFP to illustrate the interconnections between environmental health issues, tourism, and social determinants of health in the Caribbean.

The case includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is the third case in an 11-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
