Shifting Culture in Clinical Symptom Screening

2016

This case considers the use of the Edmonton Symptoms Assessment Screening (ESAS) in strengthening the culture between patients and health care practitioners in clinics across Ontario. ESAS is a standardized symptom screening tool that is completed by patients at each clinic visit. ESAS gives an opportunity to identify symptoms earlier on, prevent emergency admission, and manage symptoms such as pain. The case follows program manager Lisa Grey as she oversees an effort to change attitudes and beliefs among patients and health care employees, and highlight the value of using ESAS on a consistent basis.

The case includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is the ninth case in an 11-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be freely copied and used for educational purposes by an accredited educational institution.
