2023 Kids Count Data Book

2023

This report, published by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, presents state and national data on child well-being in the United States across four key domains: economic well-being, education, health, and family and community. Kids Count delves into these topics through data on 16 key indicators and explores each indicator by race and ethnicity to examine disparities between groups. First published in 1990, the 2023 edition focuses on how the lack of affordable and accessible childcare negatively impacts children, families, and businesses in the U.S.

The report describes the current state of childcare in the U.S., which includes a significant lack of affordability and accessibility to child care for families, along with low wages and operations challenges for child care providers. The report also examines racial and ethnic inequities in child well-being, outlining the disparities that disproportionately impact youth of color. The report presents state rankings on each indicator for child well-being and offers recommendations to improve childcare in the U.S.,  such as increasing government funding for child care programs, improving infrastructure for home-based care, and providing aid to young parents.

This report includes an interactive data book, downloadable state data profiles on kids well-being, and downloadable data tables.
