Digital Public Library of America Primary Source Sets

2024

This educational portal, offered by the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), is designed to help middle- and high-school students develop critical thinking skills by exploring topics in history, literature, science, and culture through primary sources. Each "primary source set" integrates online materials from libraries, archives, and museums across the United States, such as letters, photographs, posters, oral histories, video clips, sheet music, and more. Sets also include a topic overview, ten to fifteen primary sources, links to related resources, and a teaching guide.

For example, check out the primary source sets, The Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878 and There is No Cure for Polio, along with their companion teaching guides, Exploring the Yellow Fever Epidemic and Exploring the Polio Epidemic and Vaccine. Additional tools include Using Primary Sources from the Library of Congress.
