HIV Drug Resistance Report 2021

2021

This report published by the World Health Organization provides an update on the rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) worldwide and the progress toward ensuring access to medicines for the treatment and prevention of HIV. This year’s report indicates significant progress in the implementation of HIVDR surveillance, summarizing findings from 38 countries that conducted nationally representative HIVDR surveys between 2014 and 2021. The report finds that in 2020, nearly 65 percent of countries had national plans for the prevention, response, and monitoring of HIV drug resistance. The publication outlines global efforts to prevent, monitor, and respond to HIV drug resistance and assesses programmatic quality indicators related to drug resistance. The report also summarizes progress made toward implementing the Global Action Plan on HIVDR (2017-2021), which outlines a roadmap for responding to increasing levels of HIVDR and presents opportunities for responding to HIV drug resistance and improving the quality of care moving forward.
