I Clean Nagpur: A Case of Social Entrepreneurship

2017

This case study focuses on the “I Clean Nagpur” project in Nagpur city, located in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The program, which was founded by a housewife in her late fifties and is completely volunteer-operated, identifies dirty spots in the city, then coordinates the cleaning, painting, and beautification of those areas. The team of more than 130 volunteers also runs cleanliness- and hygiene-related workshops for school children. The case explores the rationale behind this project; some of the struggles it confronts in upkeeping its targeted spots across the city, including lack of public garbage bins and a shortage of clean public toilets; the challenges faced by its founder and volunteers to sustainably scale up; and parallels with a similar but failed project in Hyderabad. It introduces students to the concept of social entrepreneurship and demonstrates how to bring in social change and create change agents, showcasing a successful example of how to inspire self-motivated volunteers who are committed to a larger social goal. A related teaching note is also available.
