UNESCO Science Report: The Race Against Time for Smarter Development

2021

This report from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) maps science, technology, and innovation (STI) worldwide, summarizing progress made since 2010 against the backdrop of socioeconomic, geopolitical, and environmental trends that have shaped policy and governance. This edition of the report arrives at the halfway mark for countries' progress towards delivering on their 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. It assesses the development priorities of countries of all income levels, examining their transition to digital and green economies. There is still a significant knowledge gap in sustainability science, particularly for lower-income countries. Governments must combine their industrialization and infrastructure development priorities with research, innovation, and technology. In addition to the full report, users can access regional overviews, view the report's facts and figures, and download a statistical annex with the underlying data tables used in the analysis.
