The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2023

2023

The 2023 edition of The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) highlights how the major drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition have intensified, including global conflict, economic shocks due to disrupted supply chains, and climate extremes. This annually released report is jointly published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Readers can access the complete report online, read an abbreviated report brief, watch a summary video, view an interactive story with data and figures, explore an interactive map, or can download the report brief or the complete report. A set of appendices provides statistical tables with the most recent data, documentation of methods, definitions, and a glossary.

The report documents that global estimates of hunger and food insecurity remain relatively unchanged in 2022 compared to the sharp increases in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The report finds that 11.3 percent of the global population are experiencing severe food insecurity, a slight decrease from 11.7 percent in 2022 but still far above pre-pandemic levels. This year’s report focuses on how urbanization is driving changes in agrifood systems, access to healthy diets, and nutrition. The report emphasizes that rather than creating stark divisions between rural and urban populations, a more nuanced view of the rural-urban continuum is necessary to understand geospatial trends in food security and nutrition.
