Global Polio Eradication Initiative Organization

2024

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) works around the world with the goal of eradicating all types of polio, from wild to vaccine-related as well as Sabin polioviruses. The organization was founded in 1988 after the World Health Organization passed a resolution making the elimination of polio a global priority. GPEI is a public-private partnership led by national governments with five partners – the World Health Organization (WHO), Rotary International, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. GPEI’s current countries of focus are Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
