Implementing Epilepsy Awareness Education in Elementary Schools

2017

This case study describes how an elementary school curriculum initiative for an epilepsy awareness was developed to address the social and health concerns of youth with epilepsy living in a Canadian city. The case considers the chronic disease risks of epilepsy, the social implications of the disease for youth, and the critical challenge of engaging school boards, local political governance, and related stakeholders in addressing the health needs of this community. The case would be particularly useful to K-12 teachers and administrators interested in building sensitivity and awareness of how epilepsy affects their students.

The case includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 12-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be copied and used free of charge without permission for any educational uses by an accredited educational institution.
