Camp fYrefly: Integrating a Holistic Health Plan into a Sexual and Gender Minority

2017

This case study describes an initiative to integrate a holistic health approach within Camp fYrefly, a successful summer camp that builds leadership and resiliency skills for sexual and gender minority youth (SGM) and their allies. SGM youth face increased risks of health disparities related to familial and social rejection with resulting alienation, depression, risk of increased self-harm, reduced self-efficacy, and impaired ability to adjust to maturation. This case would be suitable for use in classroom discussions of LGBTQ and SGM health, adolescent health, social determinants of health, and leadership education.

The case includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 12-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be copied and used free of charge without permission for any educational uses by an accredited educational institution.
