Transitioning From Prison to Community

2017

This case study describes the Irish Red Cross (IRC) Community Based Health and First Aid Prison Program as it expanded from a successful in-prison effort to begin also addressing health challenges associated with transitioning from prison to community. The IRC provides extensive humanitarian support and community services to the most vulnerable in Ireland and abroad. The case focuses on the value of peer-to-peer education in effective health promotion, and on the social factors ex-prisoners need to successfully reenter their community and avoid recidivism. The case would be suitable for classroom discussions about global risks of incarceration and social factors in community health.

The case includes guidance for instructors, including learning objectives and discussion questions. It is part of a 12-case collection written by students in the MPH class of the Schulich Interfaculty Program in Public Health at Western University, Canada. The cases may be copied and used free of charge without permission for any educational uses by an accredited educational institution.
