Polio Eradication: Instructor's Note

2017

This instructor’s note supports a teaching pack on polio eradication, with a focus on the health care system challenges of eradicating an infectious and debilitating disease in conflict settings. After reading a four-part National Geographic series about polio eradication efforts in Pakistan and Syria, students participate in one or both of two lessons, “Polio Risk in a Messy World” and “Eradicating Polio in Conflict Settings,” to compare and contrast the diverse factors contributing to polio incidence in those regions, discuss potential response strategies, and analyze the extent to which globalization-related social determinants of health may serve as barriers to vaccination coverage. Each lesson plan includes discussion questions and suggested activities. The teaching pack also includes an annotated bibliography and glossary of terms specific to infectious disease responses in settings of conflict and violence. A more expansive resource pack on polio eradication is also available.
