Nations Within a Nation: Variations in Epidemiological Transition Across the States of India, 1990-2016 in the Global Burden of Disease Study

2017

This article from The Lancet seeks to estimate the disease burden and risk factors in every state in India, noting that the lack of these health data to date is of significant concern particularly since India is home to nearly one-fifth of the world’s population. Using the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016, the researchers found that while disability-adjusted-life-years (DALYs) dropped by about a third in India over the past quarter century, the burden of disease and risk factors were unevenly distributed. By mapping these inequities and identifying gaps in data availability, the authors seek to enable public health interventions that identify and prioritize areas and populations of highest need.
