Chagas Disease Vector Control in Honduras

2017

This case describes a health governance initiative to control Chagas disease in Honduras between 2003 and 2012, an effort by the Honduran Ministry of Health with the assistance of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and others. The case provides background information about Honduras, Chagas disease, and the program by the Guatemalan Ministry of Health and JICA that provided the template for the program in Honduras. Readers learn how the surveillance model and vector control intervention were adapted and the challenges the program faced to maintain success despite decreased funding and leadership changes.

Learning Objectives: A productive class discussion will allow students to appreciate strategies in control of neglected tropical diseases; Chagas disease vector control and surveillance; the role of bilateral cooperation to strengthen health systems management; and how regional disease control initiatives are implemented locally.

The Global Health Delivery (GHD) Project, an interdisciplinary collaboration between Harvard Business School, Harvard Medical School, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, investigates the management decisions behind disease treatment and prevention globally. The Global Health Delivery (GHD) Case Collection is a set of teaching case studies that are available for all at no cost online through Harvard Business Publishing, GHDonline, and The Case Centre.
