Perspectives on Health Equity and Social Determinants of Health

2017

This report from the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) highlights recent research on the cultural factors that give rise to health inequities. The report is based on presentations and discussions from two stakeholder meetings of the NAM’s Culture of Health Program, composed of leaders from fields not traditionally associated with health equity, including philanthropy, advocacy, community organizations, federal and state governments, and business. The report is a call to build a culture of health movements by empowering communities, and to work across disciplines and sectors. Sections focus on health equity research and policy, systems approach to health equity, and advancing health equity in communities of color. The report would be suitable for graduate-level classroom discussions about the multidisciplinary nature of effective global health responses.

Related materials from the January 2017 session include videos and opening remarks from the Culture of Health Program and links to a “Public Briefing Book” of background documents, highlights, and presentations.
