Extreme Heat and Migration

2017

This brief from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) examines the implications on populations worldwide of “very strong heat stress,” meaning conditions that are too hot for humans to function well. The authors point to projections that the number of people living in very strong heat stress could go from under 1 million as it is now to 30 million by the end of the century. They present data and diagrams on worldwide temperatures and hypothetical scenarios that could lead to forced migration in the decades to come. The brief closes by recommending initiatives to gather more climate data, country-specific research to identify particularly vulnerable populations, and adaptation policies that promote migration in response to climate change.
