UNAIDS Global AIDS Update 2023

2023

This report published by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) is the annual update on the state of HIV and AIDS worldwide. In 2022, there were approximately 1.3 million new HIV infections—the smallest number of new infections since the 1980s—and approximately 630,000 AIDS-related deaths. This year’s report focuses on the pathway to ending AIDS by 2030, highlighting how countries with strong political and financial commitment to prioritizing human rights, removing structural barriers, and engaging with communities are achieving successful results. However, challenges of inequality and a widening funding gap remain, threatening to stall progress.

This annual report provides a comprehensive overview of HIV/AIDS statistics globally and by region, including data on antiretroviral therapy coverage, HIV testing, the 95-95-95 targets, violence, discrimination, and more. The report also includes data on key at-risk populations, including people who inject drugs, sex workers, men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women, and people in prisons. Additionally, the report highlights the increased risk of HIV infection for women and adolescent girls aged 15 to 24, citing increased sexual and gender-based violence and limited access to prevention and treatment services. Regional profiles are included at the end of the report.

Chapters include:

  • Chapter 1: Pathways to Success in the HIV Response
  • Chapter 2: Breaking Down Barriers: Removing the Obstacles That Hold Back HIV Responses
  • Chapter 3: Opportunities for Quicker Progress Towards Ending AIDS
  • Chapter 4: Regional Profiles

The report is accompanied by an executive summary, a microsite, a statistics fact sheet, regional and thematic fact sheets, and a downloadable epidemiology slide deck
