World Trade Report 2017
2017
This report by the World Trade Organization (WTO) examines how technology and trade impact labor markets, with particular focus on their roles in shifting employment from manufacturing to services, in the decreasing proportion of middle-skilled jobs, in the value placed on skills, and in women’s participation in the workforce. While technological progress and trade are major economic drivers overall, their benefits are not evenly distributed and they can adversely affect specific regions and types of workers. The report suggests that helping workers adjust to changes in the labor market and ensuring that benefits are widely and fairly distributed will aid in maximizing the benefits of open trade and technological advances.
