Collected Wisdom: Strategies & Resources from TAs for TAs

2007

This guide from Carnegie Mellon University includes best practices to prepare for and teach a class. Aimed at new educators, the guide includes practical insights from dozens of teaching assistants and faculty across disciplines. The teaching strategies, which can be adapted based on classroom context, are focused on helping educators understand their students, present information clearly, improve participation, and navigate inevitably difficult situations with greater ease. The guide also includes helpful checklists for educators about setting expectations, supporting complex student needs, and presenting in front of the classroom, as well as tips for effective grading, groups meetings, and feedback.

The Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and Educational Innovation at Carnegie Mellon University is dedicated to supporting Carnegie Mellon faculty and graduate students as educators.
