Design, Selection, and Implementation of Instructional Materials for the Next Generation Science Standards

2018

This report from the Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine summarizes the presentations and discussions from a June 2017 workshop. That workshop focused on the development of instructional materials that reflect the principles of the “Framework for K-12 Science Education” and the “Next Generation Science Standards: For States, By States” (NGSS). Instructional materials that align with the vision set forth by that framework and NGSS represent key mechanisms for creating high-quality learning experiences for students, and states and school districts have expressed the need for greater coordination across ongoing efforts to support the design and implementation of such materials for science education. The report describes the current state of K-12 science education, discusses the processes and challenges of developing and selecting materials for the NGSS, presents models for developing and distributing instructional materials, and offers guidance for implementing those materials for the NGSS.
