Graphic Medicine: Ill-Conceived and Well-Drawn!

2024

This resource portal from the National Library of Medicine explores “graphic medicine,” the field that uses comics to tell personal stories of health and illness. In comics, text and image work together to create meaning; often times, the author uses the artwork to convey the internal, emotional dimension of health and health care experiences. The exhibit includes excerpts from a variety of graphic medicine texts, which highlight patient, clinician, caregiver, and public health perspectives. The artists and authors featured have written about experiences with cancer, depression, HIV/AIDS, and more. The exhibit also features lesson plans for high school and university audiences that explain how to leverage these excerpts in the classroom. In addition to learning objectives, the lessons include glossaries, detailed class procedures, and extension activities.
