The Impact of HIV and AIDS on the World of Work: Global Estimates

2018

This report from the International Labour Organization (ILO) provides health data, particularly HIV prevalence information, along with labor force, economic, and demographic data, to describe the social and economic impacts of HIV and AIDS on workers and their households. It includes country-level, regional, and global data “snapshots” of HIV prevalence, deaths, and full and partial inability to work for the male and female workforces, as well as estimates for other economic and social impacts such as lost earnings, additional care work, child labor participation, and impact on children’s education. The report emphasizes the importance of integrating health data with social and economic data to best understand the multiple dimensions of HIV/AIDS and AIDS-related illnesses, and is designed to provide policymakers and other stakeholders with quantitative data that can inform national HIV and AIDS policy and programs.
