Indigenous Women's Maternal Health and Maternal Mortality
2018
This fact sheet from the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) summarizes data from 16 low- and middle-income countries on the maternal health status of indigenous women and adolescent girls. Indigenous women and girls face disproportionate levels of discrimination, exclusion, and violence, and suffer significantly worse maternal health outcomes than many other populations. This publication examines the barriers driving these disparities and identifies actions to close the gap and ensure that no indigenous women are left behind as beneficiaries and actors of development.
