Lancet Commission 2018: Advancing Global Health and Strengthening the HIV Response in the Era of the SDGs

2018

This report from the International AIDS Society-Lancet Commission examines the future of the international HIV response in light of the integrated global health and development agenda represented by the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which was adopted by the international community in 2015 and established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to address global challenges through economic, social, and environmental progress. The Commission report reflects on the four-decade-long battle against HIV/AIDS in order to identify lessons learned that can inform and strengthen global health more broadly. One of the Commission’s central findings is that the HIV epidemic is not on track to end and that existing tools are insufficient to curb the spread of the disease. The authors call for a rejuvenated global effort to renew and strengthen both the prevention and treatment of HIV, and argue that integration with broader global health efforts is critical to success. The Commission is accompanied by several expert comments as well as by linked content about HIV and opioid drug use in Russia from The Lancet HIV.
