Protected Planet Report 2020

2021

This biennial report, published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), assesses the state of protected areas around the world by analyzing data from the World Database on Protected Areas. This edition of the report provides the final update on progress towards achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 worldwide, created in 2010 as a part of the global community’s strategy to address biodiversity loss, ensure the sustainable use of natural resources, and secure equitable sharing of benefits. Although there has been promising progress in expanding the coverage of terrestrial and marine protected areas and in the conservation of key biodiversity areas, there have been gaps in equitable governance and management of protected areas, and in the preservation of offshore oceans and freshwater ecoregions. With each of the 10 chapters analyzing a specific aspect of the Aichi Biodiversity Target, this report provides information relevant today and crucial for the post-2020 biodiversity framework, when governments will coordinate efforts for ensuring long-term preservation of the biodiversity and natural resources needed to support human well-being.

The Protected Planet Digital Report 2020 contains numerous data visualizations and interactives presenting findings from the report.
