The Economics of Microbial Threats: Proceedings of a Workshop

2018

This report, published by the National Academies Press (NAP), summarizes the proceedings of a workshop exploring the global economic losses from infectious disease crises, estimated to be $60 billion per year in the 21st century, and expected to rise as a result of globalization. The report highlights the direct and indirect effects of infectious disease mortality and morbidity, behavioral changes, and fear of infection on national markets and the global economy. While there is increasing awareness of the interplay of economics and infectious diseases, a deeper understanding is still incomplete. The workshop participants analyzed gaps in current economic assessments; opportunities in economic and epidemic risk modeling; strategies for accelerating research and investments to counter antimicrobial threats; approaches for incentivizing international collective action and preparedness; and collaboration and coordination efforts across sectors and multilateral institutions to prevent and mitigate health and economic losses from infectious disease.
