Global Humanitarian Overview 2024

This report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) assesses humanitarian needs worldwide and how to best respond to them. The report provides an overview of global trends, analyzes the drivers of humanitarian need, and discusses response plans and resources needed to effectively support communities and deliver better humanitarian assistance. 

In the wake of global conflict, the worsening climate crisis, and widespread economic factors, the world saw record numbers of forced displacement and food insecurity for people in 2023. As a result, the report estimates that nearly 300 million people worldwide will need humanitarian relief in 2024. The report provides an overview of projected global humanitarian needs in 2024 and offers further detailed analyses by region. Globally, the largest number of people needing humanitarian assistance live in East and Southern Africa, and the report highlights the widespread conflict in Sudan, where an estimated 30 million people in the country alone require humanitarian need. The report also cites the extreme number of civilians killed in occupied Palestine in 2023, which accounts for almost 60% of the global civilian deaths in 2022. The report also presents data and recommendations on humanitarian aid delivery to ensure that coordinated assistance effectively reaches those with greatest need.
