Exploring Tax Policy to Advance Population Health, Health Equity, and Economic Prosperity

2019

This report from the National Academies Press (NAP) summarizes presentations and discussions from a 2017 workshop in which attendees explored tax policy’s relationship to advancing population health, health equity, and economic prosperity. The workshop brought together experts in diverse fields to explain the past use of tax policies to channel resources and shape economic incentives that affect population health; examine examples to understand how tax policies can benefit both investors and the overall advancement of health and economic goals; and equip each participant with the basic knowledge and language to evaluate how to advance tax policy in favor of health and well-being across various sectors. Participants engaged in cross-sector dialogue, examined case studies and discussed future actions, talked through challenges in policy design, and suggested ways to collaborate and create bipartisan solutions for more effective tax policies.
