A Roadmap to Reducing Child Poverty

2019

This report from the National Academies Press (NAP) focuses on child poverty in the U.S. and the negative impacts that it has on a children’s growth and development, as well as society more broadly. There is a significant amount of evidence suggesting that a lack of family economic resources compromises a child’s ability to grow and achieve success in adulthood. Furthermore, the U.S. loses between $800 billion and $1.1 trillion annually due to lost adult productivity, costs of crime, and health expenditures associated with child poverty.  Because healthy and productive citizens are the foundation of any society, this consensus study report dives into the context factors that drive family poverty and outlines two evidence-based policy packages that can half the number of children living in poverty in ten years. The report is accompanied a fact sheet for policy makers; a brief summarizing key takeaways; and an interactive data explorer illustrating how different policy decisions would affect child poverty.
