Global Health Transitions and Sustainable Solutions

2019

This report from the National Academies Press (NAP) summarizes a workshop focused on the financial transition of health financing from multilateral assistance to self-financing health systems and the challenges this creates for global health. A group of 24 countries have relied on multilateral development assistance for health system financing for a considerable period of time. However, this form of financing will soon be unavailable to these countries as they graduate to higher-income status. The implications of this transition are not well understood and could pose issues with managing non-communicable and communicable diseases. The goal of the workshop was to collectively explore models for partnership with the private sector and to examine possible solutions for countries undergoing this transition.
