Lancet Series 2019: Diabetes in Humanitarian Crises

2019

This Lancet Series examines the current burden of diabetes, the use of diabetes services, and the challenges related to providing diabetes care in humanitarian crises. The first paper reviews literature surrounding the burden of diabetes in humanitarian crises, despite the amount of information available being relatively low in number and quality. The authors proposed next steps for future research in this area. The second paper explores the challenges of providing diabetes care in humanitarian settings – including lack of funding, restricted access to medicines and testing materials, as well as care guidelines adapted for humanitarian crises areas. Both papers provide an insight into the necessary measures that need to be undertaken in order to effectively manage diabetes in humanitarian crises zones.
