Women and HIV — A Spotlight on Adolescent Girls and Young Women

2019

This brief report, published by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), provides data and  infographics about the disproportionate HIV burden faced by adolescent girls and young women, and describes how gender inequalities and discrimination further compound their vulnerabilities to HIV. Adolescent girls and women—particularly those who experience gender-based violence, are sexually exploited, or use drugs—are often underserved by services and underrepresented by policies and investments. The report outlines the ways in which many countries are falling short of their commitments made to adolescent girls in the 2016 United Nations Political Declaration on Ending AIDS, and calls for tailored HIV strategies to address the needs of all women and girls at each stage in the life cycle.
