Are the World's Richest Countries Family Friendly?

2019

This report, prepared by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), reviews family policies in 41 high- and middle-income countries that are part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) or the European Union (EU). It compiles data on paid leave for mothers and fathers, breastfeeding, and childcare and uses these data to identify family policy outliers. The report identifies Iceland, Norway, and Sweden as the most family-friendly countries and Cyprus, Greece, and Switzerland as the least, although it notes that all countries vary across the studied indicators. The report concludes that many rich countries fail to offer comprehensive family-friendly policies and recommends policies ensuring better availability and accessibility of paid leave and childcare, greater facilitation and promotion of breastfeeding, and better collection of data on family-friendly policies.
