Improving Care to Prevent Suicide Among People With Serious Mental Illness

2019

This report published by the National Academies Press (NAP) summarizes the proceedings of a workshop about preventing suicide among people with serious mental illness. Speakers and presentations discussed what is already known about mental illness, what is currently being done, and ways to improve and implement interventions to reduce suicide risk. They focused on the importance of improving access to care among vulnerable populations—such as veterans and military service members—who have serious mental illness. Panelists discussed ways to improve awareness and communication about serious mental illness for individuals and families and implement effective interventions for prevention at the state and city levels that connect the continuum of care.
